Healthy Watersheds Program
Farmers and landowners across the Sydenham River Watershed can help improve water quality and health of the watershed by adopting stewardship practices and conserving marginal land.
The SCRCA’s Healthy Watershed Program provides technical and financial support for several projects including planting riparian buffers (native grasses, shrubs, and/or trees), erosion control, building soil health, creating wetlands, fencing livestock from watercourses, wildlife habitat creation, and more!
As part of this program, SCRCA staff will meet with landowners on their property, offer advice, and assist with project design and the coordination of contractors and materials. The SCRCA is able to obtain grant funding or direct landowners to funding opportunities to offset the cost of implementing stewardship projects that improve water quality.
Water Quality Issues
Excess nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen as well as sediment are key water quality issues in the Sydenham River Watershed.
Best Management Practices
There is no single perfect solution to manage soil health, nutrients, and erosion on all drains, properties or farming operations.
To help landowners, drainage professionals, farmers, and other land stewards decide which best management practices will work best for them, the SCRCA offers technical support and hosts expert-led as well as peer-to-peer knowledge sharing events. These educational events support land stewards in the adoption of cost-effective, evidence-based solutions.
