Avoiding Conflict with Humans
Unfortunately out of fear or misunderstanding, people injure or harm snakes. There are a few species in the Sydenham watershed that are at a greater risk of human persecution as they have a blotchy pattern that looks similar to a rattlesnake and some will even mimic them with a defensive display that involves vibrating their tails but these species are nonvenomous and do not pose a danger to humans.
If you are afraid of snakes and you come across one, do not panic or hurt it. It is best to:
- Stop
- Retrace your steps, and
- Give them space
Depending on the species, they will likely look for an opening to escape the encounter or remain still waiting for you to leave. Like any wild animal, if you get too close and they feel threatened, they may put on a defensive display or strike, warning you to move away.
Snakes are often misunderstood animals but are vital to the ecosystem and even human health. For example, some species eat rodents which helps control mice populations that can carry ticks and Lyme disease. Other snakes only eat insects or worms – they’re not so scary after all!
