The Spectacular Sydenham Species at Risk Art Contest
The Results Are In!

The Spectacular Sydenham Species at Risk Art Contest has come to a close and we had so many wonderful entries!
Category 1: Open Art Contest (all ages)
The grand prize winner for the Open Art Contest was Michael Robert with “Mishiikenh waasechigan (Turtle window)”. Michael created this artwork using acrylic on canvas and reclaimed wood, it depicts Grass Pickerel and Sunfish.
Second place was a tie!
Fiona Rose created a digital art piece titled “The Sydenham River”. The scene depicts Eastern Sand Darter, Salamander Mussel, Northern Madtom, Grass Pickerel, and Spiny Softshell.
Also in second place was a beautiful watercolour painting by Zaina Alam Piya called “Blanding’s Turtle”.
We also had some fantastic children’s Open Art Contest entries!
Our randomly selected winner was Charlotte Papanayotou, age 8, with a sculpture of a turtle titled “Turtle in the Sea”.
Micah Marnoch, age 5, created a clay sculpture of a Spotted Sucker titled “Fish”.
Category 2: Colouring Contest (recommended for 12 and under)
We had over 60 entries to our Spectacular Sydenham Species at Risk Colouring Contest! One winner was chosen for each of the Spiny Softshell Turtle and the Eastern Sand Darter colouring pages. And a bonus winner was selected at random.
The Eastern Sand Darter prize goes to: Linaya Riehl, age 7.
The Spiny Softshell Turtle prize goes to: Ellie Spoelstra, age 8.
And our randomly selected bonus winner was Nolan Greenwood, age 10, with an Eastern Sand Darter.

Art Contest Details

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority invites you to delve a little deeper into the world of our local Species at Risk. We want you to create your own masterpiece inspired by the Species at Risk that can be found in the waters of the Sydenham River.
The art contest is open to participants of all ages and will be judged in two categories – the open art contest (all ages) and the colouring contest (recommended for ages 12 and under).
To enter, submit an attachment (for example, a scan or photo) of your creation and your completed contest entry form to [email protected] by May 1, 2022 for a chance to win a prize package!
Category 1: Open Art Contest (all ages)
Open art contest entries may include paintings, drawings, sculptures, or any other media you can think of! Your artwork should be inspired by one or more of the Species at Risk that can be found in and around the waters of the Sydenham River (Need some ideas? Visit the species pages to learn more).
To enter you will need to:
- Create a piece of artwork inspired by Species at Risk in the Sydenham River
- Complete an Open Art Contest Entry Form (pdf)
- Submit to [email protected] by May 1, 2022
Grand Prize:
- A two-night SCRCA camping pass

Category 2: Colouring Contest (recommended for 12 and under)
For the colouring contest, artists should choose either the Eastern Sand Darter or Spiny Softshell colouring page and bring these animals to life by adding a splash of colour and maybe even some of the habitat they call home!
To enter you will need to:
- Colour either the Eastern Sand Darter or Spiny Softshell colouring page

- Complete a Colouring Contest Entry Form (pdf)

Two winners will receive:
