The Spectacular Sydenham Species at Risk Art Contest
The Results Are In!
July 2023 | SCRCA Biology Team
The Spectacular Sydenham Species at Risk Art Contest has come to an end and it was very difficult to pick just a few prize winners – we received so many fantastic entries! Thank you to everyone who participated to help us celebrate the Sydenham!
Category 1: Adult and Teen’s Open Art Contest (ages 13 and up)
The grand prize winner of the Adult and Teen’s Open Art Contest category was Megan Chauvin with a beautiful pencil drawing of a Midland Painted Turtle titled “Art in a Shell”.

Our runner-up for this category was Chevaun Toulouse with a close up photograph of one of our local Species at Risk. The piece is titled “Bepeshaabigizid Gnebig / Eastern Milksnake”.

Category 2: Kid’s Open Art Contest (ages 12 and under)
Addison Speake won the grand prize for the Kid’s Open Art Contest category with a mixed medium work of art titled “Northern Sunfish in a Northern Lake”. Addison created this composition by drawing and painting with watercolors!

Our runner-up for this category was Kohen Vandenheuvel who used pen and pencil to draw an underwater scene of two Species at Risk found in the Sydenham River, a Spotted Sucker and a Fawnsfoot, along with one of the threats they face – pollution. The artwork is titled “Swimming Spotted Sucker”.

Category 3: Colouring Contest (recommended ages 12 and under)
We had a lot of fantastic entries for our Colouring Contest again this year!
Our grand prize winner for this category was Micah Spoelstra. Micah went the extra mile by incorporating the Eastern Hog-nosed Snake’s habitat and prey (a toad) into the colouring page!

Jack Spoelstra was our runner-up in the Colouring Contest with this serene depiction of a Blackstripe Topminnow!

We’d like to thank everyone who took part in The Spectacular Sydenham Species at Risk Art Contest this year!
